Marching Band
I believe in utilizing contemporary rehearsal techniques to encourage the highest quality musical and visual performance from the students. As the band director at Merritt Island High School, I had the opportunity to lead the marching band. Through my seven years, the staff and I gradually increased the demand on the students via show design and expectation level. The staff included a booster-funded percussion director, guard director, woodwind consultant, and brass consultant. Although we did not have many resources available, the students worked extremely hard and we achieved competitive success on the FMBC (Florida Marching Band Championships) Circuit as well as receive superior ratings at the District 10 Marching Music Performance Assessment hosted each year by the Florida Bandmasters Association.
At Baylor University, I have had the opportunity to serve as a Graduate Associate with the Baylor Golden Wave Band. My responsibilities have included coordinating the visual performance of the ensemble from the tower as well as running music rehearsals on show and stand music. Watching Dr. Odajima and Dr. Ivey rehearse has given me a new appreciation for how to run efficient and effective rehearsals, and I am excited to employ my nine years of experience back at the high school level.
I often observe drum corps rehearsals to try and learn how to be a more effective technician. These educators are some of the best in the world, and I believe in learning from those at the forefront of the activity. I also take inspiration from "Inside the Circle" and "Dynamic Marching" when working with marching bands. I have used both Ultimate Drill Book and Drillbook Next when teaching drill and have used Pyware to write two high school marching shows during the pandemic.
